He tells us in his preface that this is not a chronological but a cultural history. I am inclined to consider it both, for the history of the cultural rise of the Jews of Chicago runs parallel with their social and economic development. While Chicago and its Jews is in the nature of things a local history, it deals, nevertheless with matters of universal interest.
